The Boy Scouts of America recently announced that they will now allow transgender boys to become members. TG Voice Therapy, a transgender voice training provider, shares the story.
The Boy Scouts’ previous policy determined a child’s eligibility for their program based on their birth gender. Youth organizations have always utilized information from birth certificates to determine eligibility in gender-based programs. However, the Boy Scouts of America have clarified that the membership requirements now allow a child to enroll according to the gender that they identify with. By doing so, they are now allowing transgender children to become boy scouts. Because gender can be interpreted differently based on communities and state laws, the organization felt they had to update their enrollment methods.
The enrollment status has been updated, effective immediately.
This new development came because of a published account of an eight-year-old boy who was kicked out of the Boy Scouts. When other children’s parents discovered that the child was born female, they notified the organization. The Boy Scouts of America addressed the issue in a public statement to the public and reached out to the child’s parents. The organization informed them of the child’s ineligibility and offered alternative programs.
The Boy Scouts of America eventually overturned this initial decision, stating that no youth would be turned away on the basis of sexual orientation. This change in policy came more than a year after the Boy Scouts of America made the decision to let openly gay people work for the organization.
